"Bringing Light to Life": How Solar Empowers Rural Clinics and Saves Lives in Zimbabwe
"Women Are Now Delivering in the Light": How Solar Became a Lifeline for Zimbabwe's Rural Clinics
For years, medical staff in rural Zimbabwe had to turn away patients and delay critical vaccinations due to unreliable power. Today, a nationwide "Solar for Health" initiative is transforming service delivery, empowering nurses, and saving lives in the country's remotest corners.

A System in the Dark
Before the initiative, inconsistent power from the national grid crippled healthcare in rural districts. Nurses were forced to delay vaccinations, and the cold chain for essential medicines was frequently broken. "At times we could go for three days or longer without vaccinations," says Shingirai Mukonoweshuro, a Primary Care Nurse at Mazebe Clinic in Kwekwe.
The challenges were most acute at night. "We used to come here with our women in labor by night. We were using torches and would struggle when the torch batteries were dead," recalls Maqabe Moyo, a Community Leader in Silobela District. This lack of reliable light created unsafe conditions for both mothers and medical staff.
The Solar for Health Initiative
The Zimbabwe COVID-19 Response and Essential Health Services Project (ZCREHSP), a $6.6 million initiative, has been instrumental in this transformation. The project installed solar panels in 200 locations across 16 rural districts and provided solar-powered fridges to ensure that vaccines and other temperature-sensitive medications are safely stored.

With these systems, rural clinics can run fridges, lights, and essential equipment 24/7, independent of the unreliable national grid, improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes in Zimbabwe’s remotest areas.
The Transformative Impact
"With solar installation we are now vaccinating patients daily and exceeding our targets. As a result, there has been a decrease in the incidence of measles and rubella in this area."
The constant power supply has revolutionized maternal care. "Because of this intervention, women are now delivering in the light," says community leader Maqabe Moyo. Medical staff can now attend to patients at all hours, dramatically improving the quality and accessibility of care.
Nkosilathi Mulinane, a Nurse in Charge in Gokwe North, notes that the initiative has "revitalized the health facilities." Districts have seen their vaccination coverage soar from 70% to over 100%. Furthermore, solar-powered boreholes now provide clean water to the surrounding communities.
Ensuring Long-Term Sustainability
To guarantee a lasting impact, contractors have provided warranties of up to 12 years for key components like batteries and panels. Additionally, local health workers at each facility have been trained in basic maintenance and troubleshooting, empowering them to manage the systems independently.
Discussions are underway to connect eligible facilities to the national grid, allowing them to sell excess solar power back to ZESA. Plans are also in place to introduce a remote monitoring system to detect and resolve faults in real-time, ensuring the continued reliability of this life-saving initiative.

Frequently Asked Questions
Unreliable electricity from the national grid caused frequent power cuts, which disrupted critical services like vaccinations (due to broken cold chains), nighttime medical procedures, and maternal care.
It is a $6.6 million project, part of the Zimbabwe COVID-19 Response and Essential Health Services Project (ZCREHSP), which installed solar panels and solar-powered fridges in 200 medical facilities across 16 rural districts.
The initiative has led to a dramatic increase in vaccination rates (from 70% to over 100% in some districts), enabled 24/7 medical care, ensured safe childbirths at night, and improved staff morale and efficiency.
Sustainability is ensured through long-term warranties (10-12 years) on components, training local health workers on maintenance, and future plans to sell excess power back to the national grid.
